World’s Fastest ”Card Trick”
This one should be outlawed because it is so good.
Effect
A card is selected by a spectator. The card is remembered and replaced in the deck. The magician states that he will perform the fastest move in the world. The deck is given a slight shake, and the magician states that he has caused one card to reverse itself. The deck is spread and it is seen that indeed one card has actually reversed! Unfortunately, the reversed card is not the spectator’s card. The magician explains that he didn’t say it would be the selected card. The magician then explains that the reversed card tells us where the selected card is in the deck by the value (number) of the card. Let’s say the card is the five of clubs. The value (5) of the reversed card is noted, and that number of cards (5) beneath the reversed card are counted. The card at the location corresponding to the value (5) of the reversed card is found to be the originally selected card! WOW! How does he do that?
Preparation
An ordinary deck of cards and a very minor set-up. You will need to reverse a card beforehand. For illustrational purposes, let’s assume that you reverse any 5-spot card (say the 5 of clubs) it will need to be the fifth card from the face (bottom) of the deck. You may actually reverse any spot card, as long as the card is located in the numerical position corresponding to the numerical face value of the reversed card.
Performance
With the deck face-down, start spreading the cards from hand to hand allowing a spectator to select a card. (Remember there is a reversed card near the bottom of the deck that you do not want to expose.)
Once a card is selected and noted, have the card replaced on top of the deck. Now cut the deck approximately in the middle. When the cut is completed, the reversed card automatically ends up five positions above the selected card.
Go through the nonsense about “the fastest move in the world”. Give the deck a slight shake, and state that now one card is reversed in the middle of the deck. Spread the deck and one card will be face-up in the center of the spread.
The spectator should speak right up and say that the reversed card is not his card. If he hesitates, go ahead and push the issue and eventually get the spectator to admit that the reversed card is not, in fact, his card.
You can joke and say that you didn’t say it would be his card, just a reversed card. After the laugh, state that the reversed card actually is important, as it tells you just exactly where the selected card is hiding.
Set aside the face-up card and all the cards above it. Count down four cards and turn over the fifth card to reveal the selected card. WOW!!!!
I know the effect is simple, but the reaction this trick gets is so great. Try it and you will see just how good it is.
